Secure Your Shrink Wrap with Strapping Cord

Woven Cord Strapping - 3/4" x 2100' - WHITE

One of the most common general uses for shrink wrap is boat protection. Shrink wrapping a boat can be a challenging first project, however, because a boat is a very large object and has a challenging shape. This is why cross-woven strapping cord and other strapping supplies are so handy. In this blog we will explain how it is used to secure shrink wrap until it can be heated to adhere to the boat or any other item you want to protect.

What Is Strapping Cord Used For?

Along with wooden uprights and strapping buckles, lightweight woven cord strapping is used to form the support structure under shrink wrap covers. It’s also used to create the perimeter band that secures shrink wrap. Strapping cord offers a number of advantages:

  • It’s easy to apply manually using only a wire buckle and a tensioning tool
  • It stays tight once it is applied and can be re-tensioned easily if loads settle.
  • It eliminates cutting injuries for workers.
  • It’s UV resistant and will not rust, making it ideal for outdoor storage uses.
  • It’s cost effective as a wrapping solution.

Using strapping supplies is an inexpensive, dependable way to secure shrink wrap to boats, shipping containers, HVAC units, and more. The strapping can be held in place using either hand-tied knots or metal buckles and a tensioning tool. It can also be used to maneuver shrink wrap up and over a very large object.

Using Strapping Supplies to Shrink Wrap Your Boat

Shrink wrapping a boat requires the application of a perimeter strap that goes around the entire boat. This is used to bring the shrink wrap down to the water line. Strapping cord can also be used to create drop loops to center this perimeter strap. Simply knot the strapping to the railing or to a boat handle or cleat and hang a drop loop down to where the perimeter strap needs to lay and then create a loop by tying a knot.

Once you have created drops loops evenly spaced around the perimeter of the boat, you can thread the perimeter strap through them. Then install a metal buckle with the prongs facing up and towards you. Weave your strapping cord through the buckle and pull it tight on one end, and then loop the other end of the cord through the buckle as well. Adjust the drop loops so they hang straight and the cord is straight and flat across the side of the boat. Loosen or tighten the buckle as necessary with a tensioning tool to tighten the cord to your liking. Then you can tuck your shrinkfilm underneath it. Remember to tape the buckle with shrink tape to protect the boat and the shrinkfilm from damage.

When you apply heat to your shrink wrap, make sure to avoid heating the strapping tape as it can easily melt under direct heat.
